The Fascinating World of Ammonites

by Helen Johnson 25 Apr 2022

Exploring Time and Nature: The Inspiration Behind the Fossil Silk Scarf

My fascination with ammonites and ancient fossils began in 1995 during my studies in Textile Design at the University of Wolverhampton. These prehistoric molluscs, dating back to the Jurassic period around 450 million years ago, captivated me with their intricate spirals and swirling patterns. I found myself imagining these ancient forms as mystical gateways—wormholes to other dimensions—each spiral a portal wrapped in delicate floral undergrowth, twining around sculpted stone doorways that lead to unknown worlds.

This vision became the foundation of a design journey, blending ancient natural forms with botanical beauty, brought to life through hand-painted illustrations and layered textures.

Collecting Fossils Along the Jurassic Coastline

My passion led me to explore the Jurassic Coastline in Whitby, Yorkshire, renowned for its rich fossil heritage. There, I discovered a range of unique specimens, including what I believe could be a Trilobite fossil. These ancient treasures now adorn my shelves, serving as daily inspiration for new sketches, designs, and creative explorations that bridge the worlds of history, nature, and art.

The Artistry Behind the Fossil Silk Scarf

The Fossil Silk Scarf is a testament to this ongoing fascination. Each design is meticulously hand-painted using gouache paint, combined with collage techniques to create a layered, textural effect. The spirals of ancient ammonites intertwine with blooming botanical forms, capturing the essence of natural history through a modern artistic lens.
