How to Care for your Silk Twill Scarf
Silk Twill
Silk twill is the best quality silk used for silk scarves they are immediately recognisable by their diagonal weave. Most high-end couture houses use silk twill for their scarves.
Every scarf purchased directly from Silktopia has a manufacturer label reminder that you need to clean your scarf by an entrusted dry clean only professional. You should never wear it in the rain it will ruin the fabric.
Hand-rolled edges
The edge of the silk scarf is rolled and hand-tacked into place on the back of the design. Hand-rolled silk scarves which have rolled hems the presence of this technique on the silk indicates it’s a superior scarf, this technique is used by the high-end couture houses and high-end manufacturers.
Storage
Silk scarves that are worn frequently should be stored flat in a darkened cupboard or container. It is not advised that you store your silk scarf in a plastic bag or plastic container, as this can turn light colours and whites yellowish. The silk scarf should be stored laid flat, between protective layers of white acid-free tissue paper ideally the temperature should be 5-15°C.
If there is no space to store your silk scarf flat, scarves can be rolled inside cardboard tubes for storage. Please avoid folding the silk scarves, as this can leave permanent crease marks.
Protect & Care
Professionally dry-clean your silk scarf to protect the scarves from insects such as moths, use cedar chips or lavender sachets. It is not advisable to use any form of liquid insecticides as they can stain silk scarves and damage the fabric.
Also only iron on a silk setting, otherwise you might burn the fabric material.
Delicate and expensive scarves will require care and attention to ensure their longevity.
We would advise avoiding contact with rain as it's dirty and will ruin the fabric as well as any other chemicals and entrust the silk scarf to a professional dry cleaner when required. Like jewellery, please don’t purchase a scarf and then be afraid to wear it, it is meant to be enjoyed. One of our clients happily wears hers for shopping around Altrincham and likes to show it off wearing it to all her friends.
Do not spray perfume on after you put your scarf on, as the alcohol in the perfume will discolour your scarf, also the same be said for makeup and hairspray.
Be careful with scarf clips, rings or brooches and these items may puncture a hole in your silk and pull a thread. Also, for any jewellery such as necklaces or dangling earrings they may do the same, so please avoid it where possible.
